    The figure of 3 gas cylinders was arrived at by calculating the amount of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) required to make water safe to drink through boiling for an average Indian family for a period of one year. Measurements were done by independent laboratory to find out the the amount of gas required to boil water. The following figures were used to arrive at the calculation: Bases data available from HPCL, BPCL and IOCL every domestic LPG cylinders contains 14.2Kg's of gas As per United States Environmental Protection Agency norms one needs to boil water for a period of one minute in order to make it safe to drink Bases data available for 111 key cities from Indian Metrological department the starting temperature of water is assumed to be 26°C Bases data available for 111 key cities the average altitude is assumed to be 248 meters Bases 2011 Census, The average Indian family size is 4.95 Bases ARWSP guidelines, Ministry of drinking water and Sanitation average drinking water requirement per person per day is 3 litres.

  • I have high / low TDS water. Would I also save 3 cylinders of gas every year?

    Total Dissolved Salts (TDS) also has a positive relationship to the amount of gas required to boil water. Hence higher TDS would higher amount of gas required to boil water. BIS Standard IS 10500:2004 specifies the maximum permissible limit for drinking water in India to be 600 PPM (Parts per million). Such low amount of TDS will have minimal impact on the amount of gas required to boil water.

  • I boil water in a stainless steel / aluminum vessel. Would I also save 3 cylinders of gas every year?

    Yes the material used for boiling vessel will have an impact on the amount of gas required to boil water. Most utensils used for boiling water in India are made out of stainless steel or aluminum. We have used both the vessels in our experiments to arrive at the amount of gas required.

  • I boil 5 liters of water at one go. Would I also save 3 cylinders of gas every year?

    Yes, the higher the amount of water boiled at one go the lower will be the gas requirement. One of the most energy efficient methods used in households is to boil 5 litres of drinking water at one go. Hence we have calculated the amount of gas required to boil water by assuming that one would be boiling 5 litres at one go.

  • I boil water in a vessel with a lid covering it. Wouldn't this have an impact on gas required to boil water?

    Yes, boiling water with a lid covering the vessel will reduce the amount of gas required. Hence we have calculated the amount of gas required to boil water by assuming that one would be boiling with a lid on.

  • I don't boil drinking water every day. Will I also save 3 gas cylinders every year?

    The calculation of 3 gas cylinders has been made bases assumption that all water used for drinking is being boiled. However if one doesn't boil all water used for drinking then the amount of LPG cylinders used would be proportionately lesser.

  • I have a small family / I have a large family. Will I also save 3 gas cylinders every year?

    The calculation of 3 gas cylinders has been made bases an average family size of 4.95 members (2011 census). If you have a smaller or a larger family then the amount of LPG cylinders used would be proportionately lesser / more.

  • I usually boil for 10 minutes. Will I also save 3 gas cylinders every year?

    The calculation of 3 gas cylinders has been made bases a boil time of 1 minute. If you boil beyond 1 minute then the amount of LPG cylinders used would be more. If you boil for lesser than 1 minute then the amount of LPG cylinders used will be less.

  • How much savings in money will I make?

    The price of LPG cylinder required for domestic consumption varies across India. Also basis latest government guidelines the price of the LPG cylinder has been increased for every cylinder used beyond the specified quota per family. If one assumes family usage of 1 cylinder a month and a subsidized quota of 9 cylinders per family per year, then at an average cylinder price of Rs 900 the saving could be as much as Rs 2700 every year.

  • How can you say that I will save all the money I spent on my cylinders? Doesn't Pureit have any running costs? / How is Pureit cost-effective in comparison to gas cylinders?

    If one assumes the price of subsidized LPG cylinder at Rs 450 and unsubsidized LPG cylinder at Rs 900 then boiling costs approximately anywhere between 40 paisa to 80 paisa per liter. As against this the running cost of Pureit is 30 paisa per liter. For an average family consumption of 3 litres per person per day running cost of boiling will be between Rs 2000 to 4000 per year vs. Pureit's running cost of Rs 1600 per year.

  • How can you say that I will save all the money I spent on my cylinders? Pureit also costs money to buy? / How is Pureit cost-effective in comparison to gas cylinders?

    Yes, Pureit does cost money, but it is a onetime investment vs. a yearly expense of boiling. If one assumes the price of subsidized LPG cylinder at Rs 450 and unsubsidized LPG cylinder at Rs 900 then boiling costs approximately anywhere between 40 paisa to 80 paisa per liter.   • How can you say that I waste 3 cylinders of gas every year for boiling drinking water? It is not a waste but is required to get safe drinking water, and for my family's health.

    Boiling ensures that water is safe to drink. However it is an age old method and inferior to the benefits that Pureit provides. Pureit provides as safe as boiled water but at a much lesser cost unlike boiling which doesn't remove suspended particles like dirt and dust, Pureit not only removes these suspended particles but many dissolved impurities as well.
