Our body cannot produce enough water on its own and to replenish it, we need to drink water every day related to our calorie intake. Pregnant women, who are advised an increased calorific intake during the second trimester, need to drink higher amounts of water.

Pregnant women should consume 300ml of fluid additional to their regular fluid intake.

When a woman is pregnant, she needs to consume more fluids because of the following reasons:

  • Fluid circulation
  • Amniotic fluid levels
  • Higher blood volume
  • Optimal absorption of water-soluble vitamins

The water also helps the growth of bones and teeth in the growing fetus, due to the presence of fluoride in most municipal waters.

Adequate water intake ensures sufficient reserves to tolerate blood loss during labor and helps to reduce constipation.
