An RO water purification system or Reverse Osmosis contains a semi-permeable membrane that reduces Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) from water along with several other impurities like Bacteria, Viruses, heavy metals, chemicals, and other impurities. As water passes through the semi-permeable membrane, it only allows water to pass through it, while flushing away the impurities.
If your water source has high TDS, i.e. tastes salty, it is recommended to use an RO water purifier. TDS levels upto 500 ppm are considered to give natural or regular taste to water for human consumption. As per BIS, USEPA, and WHO, if the TDS exceeds 2000 ppm, water can be unsafe for consumption as it may contain more sulphate, chlorides, and other chemical impurities.
While WHO standards stipulate upto 300 ppm as the ideal TDS level in the water, However, much depends on the composition of water with respect to the contaminants.
For example, suppose the input water source has high arsenic levels, or high iron levels but TDS levels are less than 300 ppm or 500 ppm. Then, you require an RO water purifier to remove these harmful contaminants.
